Colorado is known for our epic Rocky Mountains and Denver for our mile high elevation. Our State has 59 mountains that are 14,000 feet or higher, and about 830 mountains between 11,000 and 14,000 feet in elevation. Elevations increase towards the west to between 5,000 and 6,500 feet where the plains meet the Front Range of the Rocky Mountain chain. Here elevations rise abruptly to 7,000 to 9,000 feet. Elevation affects temperature and both vary significantly between Colorado Springs to Castle Rock, Castle Rock to Denver and Denver to Fort Collins. And let’s not forget to mention from the Continental Divide out to the Eastern Plains! With these high elevations and temperature changes, the additional moisture requirement of plants can be significant differences. Again, The Landscaping Company Inc. understands all of these nuances and will make sure your irrigation system is designed appropriately!

Four Methods of Landscape Irrigation
Designing and installing an irrigation or sprinkler system is not a “one size fits all” project. A properly designed system needs to take into consideration several important aspects: soil type; slope; sun, shade and wind exposure; and, most importantly, what type of plants the system is being designed for. For example, a lawn area located in full sun and minimal shade will likely need more frequent watering than a lawn area that has afternoon shade.
There are four methods of landscape irrigation: surface, sprinkler, drip, and trickle. Covering a large area with similar water requirements can easily be accomplished using a sprinkler system. Applying water to a garden area with a variety of plants that have varying water requirements can be a little trickier but can be accomplished using the drip irrigation method. Water output using drip irrigation systems can be calibrated based on the individual plant that is being irrigated.
Soil Type and Irrigation
The variety of potential soil types in Colorado landscapes range from heavy clay soil to sandy with every combination of soil type in between these two soils types imaginable. Evaluating the type of soil on your property is an important part of designing the appropriate irrigation system. A tree or shrub planted in heavy clay can easily suffocate and die if too much water is applied, as the clay soil surrounding the plant’s root zone act as if the plant was in a clay pot and can prevent water filtration and prevent oxygen from reaching the roots. Sandy soil is common around lakes and streams and even abandoned irrigation or drainage canals. For all intents and purposes, sandy soil has the opposite properties of heavy clay soil. Water applied to plants in sandy soil may drain too quickly and even with regular watering, plants may wither and die. Soil type evaluation is key to designing the most efficient irrigation system.
